Short Hair Trends

Even though there’s an almost bewildering number of short hair styles out there, short hair trends have been pretty steady in recent years. Variations on classic themes seem to be all the rage with celebrities, models, and therefore, everyone else.

Leading the list is the classic bob hair cut. Ever since its inception in the late 1910′s, the bob has been a consistent trend because it has a simple, clean appeal, it’s easy to manage, and a bob can be altered quickly to go from everyday wear to formal occasions. As trends in short hair go, the bob easily has the longest track record.

Next up is a short hair trend that began in the 1960′s: the pixie. While it originated earlier, the model Twiggy really brought the pixie to the masses and made it a big hit. Today, the pixie hair style is still a very popular short hair style trend for women of all ages. There are many variations and, like the bob, it’s very easy to manage. Also like the bob style, the pixie is one of those hair trends that seems to stay with us no matter what other changes come and go (fashion, jewelry, accessories, etc.).

A related hair style that began in the 60′s is the shag. It too has maintained its appeal as a trendy short hair style over the last several decades, primarily for the same reasons as the pixie. The main difference between the shag and the pixie is hair length. The shag is often longer and can even be created with medium length hair past the shoulders. Pixies tend to be “spikier” as well, whereas the shag often lays relatively flat against the skull. The key to a good short shag hair style is lots of layers. This improves the perception of volume, even with the flatter versions of this style.

The last of the short hair trends still making a splash this year is the sexy, curly style. It takes a lot more work than the bob, the pixie, or the shag cuts, but it can be stunning. Your hair stylist should definitely be consulted before you go this route, but with attention to detail and daily care, it’ll turn heads for sure.

At the end of the day, short hair styles offer a lot of options. Don’t limit yourself to what is trendy right now, especially if you can’t find a style that suits you. Trends are just that and nothing more. Sometimes the best hair style for you is one that doesn’t follow the crowd.
